Cornel West Announces He's Running for President
"I have decided to run for truth and..."
Cornel West, the progressive activist and professor, announced a presidential campaign on Wednesday.
West, a one-term Florida congressman and retired Army lieutenant colonel, was first elected in 2018 as a Democrat. He switched to the Republican Party in 2020. In his announcement speech, West said he was running for president to fight for "truth, justice, and the American dream."
"I have decided to run for president because I believe that our country is in crisis," West said. "We are facing a crisis of inequality, a crisis of injustice, and a crisis of leadership. I believe that I am the candidate who can bring our country together and lead us to a better future."
West's announcement was met with mixed reactions. Some Democrats praised West for his courage and commitment to social justice. Others were more critical, saying that West's candidacy would only further divide the Democratic Party.
West's campaign is off to a slow start. He has not yet released a detailed platform or announced any major fundraising goals. However, West is a well-known figure with a strong following among progressives. It remains to be seen whether he can translate that support into a successful presidential campaign.
